The beautiful waters of the Indian Ocean are a treasure trove of marine wildlife and the Pemba channelseparating Pemba island - known as the "green isle" - from the mainland, is a key destination for both divers and fishermen. It's unsurprising then, that the Fundu Lagoon resort caters specifically for lovers of the sea, and offers a wide range of water sports and activities, including diving courses, water ski, windsurf, sailing and canoeing.
The resort is located on the coast of the Wambaa peninsula, a paradise setting with around five kilometres of white sandy beach. Set here, on the beach are some of the luxurious bungalows and suites, three bars and restaurant. Other bungalows are up above on the hillside, but all look towards the bay. The thatched wooden buildings are in perfect keeping with the natural harmony of the fertile island. The bungalows are all independent and comfortable and the suites have private chill out areas and plunge pools.
All accommodation is just a short walk from the restaurant, whose tropical palm-frond canopy helps to create an evocative atmosphere. There are different areas where guests can dine alone or in groups, al fresco or within the covered area, enjoying local cuisine, based on the best produce the region has to offer including fish, seafood, vegetables and exotic fruits.
By day, the jetty is a perfect place for taking a dip in the warm Indian Ocean; a third of the way along the jetty is the Jetty Bar, where you can sip on a cocktail and watch the sun go down while the water laps beneath you. As well as the many water-based activities, the Fundu Fusion Spa offers a wide range of treatments, or guests can spend time playing billiards on the terrace or shopping for souvenirs among the African products sold in the boutiques.
