African style and colonial luxury are combined in unexpected harmony

The vast continent of Africa continues to exert its pull on those caught up in the busy rat race of modern life. Perhaps the attraction lies in the fact it is seen as one of the few exisiting havens where you can come face to face with Mother Nature at her wildest.

Synonymous with adventure, wildlife and exploration of the unknown, Africa is, without doubt, an attractive destination for anyone who wants to enjoy a unique holiday in a completely unfamiliar setting. And if that's your wish, there's few better places to choose for your stay than the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, in northern Tanzania, a true African paradise.

On the eastern edge of the Serengeti grasslands stands the dormant Ngorongoro volcano, in a conservation area delared a UNESCO world heritage site; the crater of this sleeping giant is rich in wildlife, and perched on the edge is the spectacular safari lodge whose 30 sumptuous suites have excellent views of the crater and the magnificent surrounding landscape. The lodge design is inspired by the traditional mud and stick architecture of the Maasai, but its unobtrusive exterior belies the luxury within. The discrete services of a personal butler ensure the guests' comfort, whether it's by serving early morning tea in bed, attending to the open fire or scattering scented rose petals on the water when he runs your bath for you.

The colonial-style interior of the lodge combines silver, gold and rich ruby tones under simple thatched roofs and banana leaf ceilings. Antiques and crystal chandeliers, great gilded mirrors, high-backed leather chairs and generous bowls of red roses combine with rich soft furnishings - Persian carpets, velvet cushions and raw-silk curtains - to complete the picture. The juxtaposition of opulent design and native African art and curios works to produce an ambience of unexpected harmony.

By day, guests can choose from a wide range of excursions and safaris to discover the wildlife in this exciting corner of Africa: Olduvai Gorge, the Serengeti plains, the elephant and buffalo herds of Taragire National Park, visits to Maasai communities... At night, on either side of the entrance to the public areas of the lodge, flames flicker in large fire bowls, casting fascinating and mysterious shadows. The complex includes an African craft shop and gallery, and meals can be enjoyed al fresco or in the vaulted dining room where the open fireplace, sparkling crystal, silver and ubiquitous fine wood make each meal a special occasion.
