Designers delight in Brussels
It goes by the name Design September, an entire month in Brussels dedicated solely to design. The city bares witness to an exciting display of exhibitions, openings, lectures, film screenings, debates and flea markets.
Main attractions in Mechelen usually include climbing to the top of St Romauld and experiencing (seeing or hearing) the bells of Belfort. Nevertheless, the talk of the town at the moment amongst the art world is the Newtopia exhibition, dedicated to discovering the relationship between art and human rights.
Also opening this month is Bob Van Reeth's new Kazerne Dossin memorial museum in recognition of the victims of the Second World War. Its objective is to explain the historical significance of the time period and tackle conflicting topics such as racism and human rights.
Belgium's world of chocolate
As if they are not lucky enough to have an endless supply of the world´s tastiest chocolate, Brussels celebrates their success in gastronomy with a chocolate week from November 4-11. During this time, chocolatiers offer workshop visits and tastings to appease the cravings of the ultimate sweet tooth.
While in Brussels, be sure to have the Tram Experience - a tram converted into a restaurant - and admire the works of European street artists.
As the weather starts to turn, it can only mean one thing. And in Flanders, Christmas and the cold equals Christmas markets. Benefit from what is transformed into a winter wonderland; skating rinks, mulled wine, markets and lights. Every city boasts its best. Whether you choose to visit Brussels market complete with a ferris wheel in Sainte-Catherine, the ice sculpture festival in Bruges or Antwerp's New Year firework display, you will not be disappointed.
