The childhood home of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is now on the market for just over £38million ($49.5million), according to TopTenRealEstateDeals.com. The former US First Lady lived at the Merrywood estate in the affluent suburb of McLean, Virginia in the 1940s after her mother married Standard Oil heir Hugh Auchinloss, and loved her time at the property.

"I always love it so at Merrywood – so peaceful… with the river and those great steep hills," Jackie wrote as a teenager in 1944, according to Town & Country. It's easy to see why Jackie would have been enamoured by her new home; the sprawling property has nine bedrooms and 13 bathrooms spread over four floors in a 23,000 square foot mansion, with extensive grounds and gardens.

The house was built in 1919 on a 46 acre estate, but it is now on a more manageable seven acres of land. It has been extensively renovated in recent years, with care taken to preserve the original architectural details. Click through the gallery to take a look through Jackie's former home…

The front door enters into a large hallway with a wide staircase that leads up to the mansion's four floors. On the ground floor there are grand main public rooms as well as more intimate family rooms, all decorated in a classic Georgian style with opulent furnishings and hardwood flooring throughout.
