Danny La Rue dies at the age of 81

Monday June 1, 2009

Female impersonator Danny La Rue has passed away at home aged 81.

"Danny died peacefully in his sleep just before midnight after a short illness," his spokesperson confirmed on Monday. "His beloved companion Annie Galbraith was with him at their home in Kent."

Born Daniel Patrick Carroll in 1927 in Cork, Ireland, Danny found fame on television in the Seventies and Eighties as a glamorous and funny female impersonator.

He disliked being called a drag artist, preferring the term 'comic in a frock'. Among his fans was the Queen, from whom he received an OBE in 2002, while Noel Coward called him simply: "The most professional, the most witty... and the most utterly charming man in the business"
