'Downton' vs 'Doctor Who' for National TV awards

Monday January 2, 2012

Period drama Downton Abbey will take on Doctor Who for the title of top drama at the National Television Awards.

ITV1's saga about the Crawleys has been shortlisted for the awards for the first time.

The Earl of Grantham's family and their servants also face competition from last year's winner Waterloo Road.

Doctor Who stars are being considered for two further awards.

Matt Smith, who plays The Doctor, up for best male performance, while Karen Gillan (Amy Pond) is up for the female equivalent.

However, none of the Downtown stars made the running for any of the acting gongs.

Voting opens today to allow viewers to have their say in the awards.

They will be presented by Dermot O'Leary from London's O2 Arena and broadcast by ITV1 on 25th January.
