Becks not 'big enough star' for 'Simpsons' guest slot

Monday January 4, 2010

He might be one of Britain's biggest names, but David Beckham is just not famous enough in the US for a cameo role on The Simpsons, it seems.

The 34-year-old football star was turned down for a guest slot on the hit cartoon comedy because TV bosses felt Americans did not know enough about him.

Executive producer Al Jean recently revealed: "I had to phone David Beckham to tell him sorry. I didn't think he was a big enough star for an American audience."

"I got a lot of grief about that. Some people got angry about it and told me, 'I bet you would have put George Best on'. But I would have turned him down too."

Brits who have made it onto the animated show include comedian Ricky Gervais, Tony Blair, Rolling Stones stars Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Paul McCartney and Elton John.
