Vladimir Putin confirms divorce from wife of 30 years

Friday April 4, 2014

Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that he has officially divorced his wife of 30 years, Lyudmila Putina.

A spokesman for the president revealed that the recent removal of Lyudmila Putina’s name from Vladimir’s website "means the divorce took place" and that the edits signify that the divorce has now been formalized.

The couple, who have two daughters Maria and Katerina, announced that they were set to divorce last June, in a staged interview that was broadcast on state television.

During the appearance the 61-year-old President said "It was a joint decision: we hardly see each other, each of us has our own life" adding that the divorce was "civilized" and the couple would “always remain close".

The pair have been plagued with divorce rumours for a while as Lyudmila has been absent from almost all official engagements since Vladimir was reinstated as president for a second term.

Speculation has also been rife about the President’s relationship with 30-year-old former Olympic gymnast Alina Kabayeva, who he has been spotted with several times since 2008.
