Ann Widdecombe – the surprise star of 'Strictly'

Monday October 4, 2010

First there was John Sergeant and his gallant efforts on the dance floor.

And now, two years on, another unlikely Strictly Come Dancing contestant has won the nation's heart.

Ann Widdecombe, the former Conservative MP, made her Strictly debut at the weekend and proved to be a big hit with the viewers.

She received a standing ovation for her waltz with partner Anton Du Beke, despite only picking up 17 points out of 40 from the judging panel.

"It was like watching the Ark Royal taking on the stormiest seas," commented Bruno Tonioli. "The ride was bumpy but you made it in to port."

Ann, 63, gave as good as she got, bouncing back from the criticism by laughing: "If you think that was bad, wait til you see the salsa!"

Other stars competing in this year's series of Strictly include Gavin Henson, Patsy Kensit, Paul Daniels, Felicity Kendal, DJ Goldie and Matt Baker.

Next week will see the first hopeful eliminated from the competition.
