'I needed a good cry': Kate Winslet opens up on divorce

Tuesday October 4, 2011

Kate Winslet has given a rare personal insight into the breakup of her marriage.

Speaking in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the actress revealed that she coped as best she could before finally breaking down at the prospect of ending her seven-year marriage to film director, Sam Mendes.

She admits that giving in to her grief didn’t come easily to her.

"It did take someone putting their hand on me - a gay male friend, actually, who put his hand on my shoulder, and said, ‘It’s OK, you can cry about this, and maybe you should´."

"I’ve had to remind myself to have those moments of being able to have a good cry."

The Titanic star is keen to point out that things remain amicable between the pair.

"We have a child together who we both love - and raising him together, jointly and without any conflict, is absolutely key" she said, referring to Joe, her seven-year-old son with Sam.

Kate celebrates her 36th birthday on Wednesday and may enjoy her special day in the company of Ned Rocknroll.

Richard Branson’s nephew, who changed his name from Abel Smith, is reportedly "madly in love" with the British actress.
