Hugh Laurie ship-shape for new pirate role

Tuesday December 4, 2012

Ditching his anti-hero physician persona, Hugh Laurie is in talks to act as scurrilous pirate Blackbeard in a new NBC drama.

Having surprised Americans with his US accent in House, Hugh will return to his English roots for the new role and consequently, his natural accent.

Hugh's spin as the misanthrophic House in the medical drama series of the same title established the actor as a household name across the pond.

Scooping six Emmys and two Golden Globes for his portrayal, the star is one of the highest-paid series actors to date, as the show saw him earn a quarter of a million dollars per episode.

The new series, entitled Crossbones, will follow notorious pirate Blackbeard and his cut-throat cohorts as they traverse the Bahamas for booty.
