History maker Adele breaks Madonna's chart record

Tuesday April 5, 2011

Award winning chanteuse Adele has broken a 21-year-old record after her second album, 21, stayed at the number one spot in the UK charts for a 10th consecutive week.

The previous holder of this accolade was Madonna, with her 1990 greatest hits album, Immaculate Collection

Before that Bob Marley and the Wailers' compilation album Legend stayed atop the charts for 12 weeks in 1984.

Adele now holds the longest-ever run at number one for a female solo artist.

The singer, who won a Grammy in 2009 for Best New Artist for her debut album 19, has seen breakout worldwide success in 2011.

Following her breathtaking performance of Someone Like You at this year's Brit awards, the single became her first to reach number one the following week, and also catapulted her album to the top of European charts.
