Cheryl Cole struck down by malaria

Tuesday July 6, 2010

X Factor judge Cheryl Cole has been hospitalised after contracting malaria.

The Geordie beauty was originally reported to have been suffering from exhaustion, but now her spokesman has confirmed she is ill with the tropical disease after being bitten by a mosquito during a trip to Tanzania.

Cheryl visited the East African nation three weeks ago with rumoured love interest Derek Hough. She did take a full course of malaria tablets, though some forms of the virus are resistant to drugs.

A friend of the singer told the Daily Mail: "Cheryl hadn't been feeling herself for about a week [after returning from holiday on June 22]. She was feeling tired and listless. This must have been the beginnings of the virus.

"During Sunday afternoon, Cheryl went downhill quickly. She was sweating and shaking and in a bad way."

The Three Words singer is now expected to spend the next few days in hospital and several weeks recovering.

"Following doctors' advice, Cheryl Cole will be cancelling all work commitments for the next week," said her rep.
