David Letterman apologises to his wife Regina on air

Tuesday October 6, 2009

Following last week's revelation that he was the victim of a sex blackmail plot, David Letterman has apologised on air to his wife Regina Lasko.

In his first chat show appearance since admitting sexual relations with members of his staff, the presenter noted the tough time his wife was going through.

"She has been horribly hurt by my behaviour," he said.

"When something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it's your responsibility, you try to fix it," the 62-year-old added.

"At that point, there's only two things that can happen: Either you're going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you're going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed."

"So let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me."

He also apologised to his staff and thanked them for "putting up with something stupid I've gotten myself involved in."

Ever the comedian, David found time for some dry humour.

Walking on to the stage he quipped: "Did your weekend just fly by?" before joking: "I got into my car this morning and even the navigation lady wasn't speaking to me."

The chat show host and his wife – who have been together since 1986 – wed in March and have a six-year-old son together.
