Gurkhas chat with PM leaves Joanna Lumley confident

Thursday May 7, 2009

Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley emerged from a 30-minute meeting with Gordon Brown saying he was "wholly supportive" of her campaign for the Gurkhas.

"We are going to have an enormous successful conclusion to this whole issue," said the actress, who has been pushing for the soldiers to have UK settlement rights.

"I trust him. And I know he has now taken this matter into his hands," she added after their chat in the House of Commons. Until now the issue had been bounced between the Home Office and the Ministery of Defence, she claimed.

Joanna became a leading supporter of the Nepalese soldiers' cause after revealing her father served alongside Gurkhas in the British Army and had once had his life saved by one.

The TV favourite recently revealed she secured royal backing for the campaign a while ago, saying a senior member of the Windsor family had written to her privately to give their support
