Jungle king Gino facing animal cruelty charges

Monday December 7, 2009

He may have been crowned the I'm A Celebrity... king of the jungle on Friday, but it's not all celebrations for Ready Steady Cook star Gino D'Acampo.

Charges are being brought against the chef and fellow contestant Stuart Manning (right) after the pair cooked a rat for a meal during their TV stint.

While the programme's producers have avoided any charges, the celebrity pair have been ordered to appear in court on February 3, 2010.

During the show, in which one of the camps was forced to survive on meagre rations, Italian chef Gino decided to kill and cook a passing rat for dinner.

"It's not done by choice but it's done because we need it. We need some kind of protein, we need some kind of flavour," Gino told the Bush Telegraph.

The RSPCA in New South Wales has said it was "not acceptable" an animal had been killed as part of a performance.

"The concern is this was done purely for the cameras," a spokesperson for the charity says.
