Spanish royals give Obama ladies a warm send-off

Monday August 9, 2010

Michelle Obama and her daughter Sasha dined with royalty on Sunday as they met with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia at the royal family's holiday retreat in Mallorca.

America's first lady and her youngest were greeted on the steps of the Marivent Palace by the royal couple, and their daughter-in-law Letizia, – Prince Felipe is returning from a visit to Bogata - who looked delighted to see both mother and daughter.

The quintet dined on a sumptuous lunch which included gazpacho soup, chargrilled turbot, veal escalopes with mustard, oriental rice with sautéed mushrooms, a Mallorca-style vegetable ratatouille and sliced fruit with ice cream.

The visit to Majorca marked the end of Michelle and nine-year-old Sasha's five-day private visit to Spain.

They flew into the capital of Palma from Marbella, where they have been staying since Wednesday, and shortly after dining they flew back home to Washington.

As a parting gift, the king reportedly presented the mum-of-two with some seeds for the White House garden, while the queen made a present of some handicrafts typical of Mallorca.
