Barbara Windsor leaves 'EastEnders' in a blaze of glory

Thursday September 9, 2010

Fans of award-winning soap EastEnders are more than acquainted with the antics of fiery landlady Peggy Mitchell, played by Barbara Windsor.

However it seems TV's national treasure is quite literally going up in flames, in a dramatic exit aired this Thursday night.

Peggy's son, Phil Mitchell - played by Steve McFadden - sets fire to the show's landmark pub, the Queen Vic and Peggy is trapped behind the bar and forced to watch the blaze.

Although it's unclear whether she survives the inferno, the Queen Vic will certainly remain on the show, as a new set has been made for the soap's HD re-launch this year.

Departing after 16 years, to spend more time with her family, Barbara has fond memories of her time on the show.

At her leaving party in July, she said: "I have had the most wonderful time on EastEnders and I will miss you all."
