'Coronation Street's' Jack Duckworth dies

Actor Bill Tarmey, best known for his role as Jack Duckworth in Coronation Street, has died aged 71.

His family have confirmed that Bill passed away on Friday morning whilst on a holiday in Tenerife.

A statement from the ITV show that made him famous said: "The cast, crew and production team at Coronation Street are devastated to hear of Bill's death. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill's wife and soulmate Ali and their family at this very sad time."

His family asked "for privacy as they grieve for a wonderful husband, father and brother".

Bill left the well-loved soap in 2010 after more than 30 years playing the pigeon-keeping, loveable rogue alongside Liz Dawn, known to soap fans as his fiesty wife Vera.

Tributes for the Manchester-born actor have flooded in, including many from his former co-stars.Antony Cotton, who plays Sean Tully in the show, took to Twitter to say: "Goodnight Bill Tarmey. You were the best. We'll miss you so much x"

Bill, who originally joined the show as an extra, suffered with ill-health. He had a heart attack at the age of 35, followed by a stroke a year later. A heavy smoker, he underwent a quadruple heart bypass 15 years ago and another bypass operation in June 2002.
