Queen unveils Diamond Jubilee monument

Wednesday October 10, 2012

The Queen has inaugarated a Diamond Jubilee monument in King Edward Shopping Court.

The contemporary statue was designed by 15-year-old schoolgirl Caroline Basara in an open competition held by the Windsor and Eton society.

Featuring 60 spheres to represent the duration of the Queen's reign, the modern piece took the competition winner just fifteen minutes to design.

Said to be impressed by the design, the monarch asked Caroline whether she had decided on a career as an artist.

She replied: "I am taking art for GCSE but I am not entirely sure yet, at the moment I am leaving my options open.

"The statue was influenced by contemporary art, I like contemporary art and contemporary dance. I thought that it might be a good idea not to do something that was too obvious."
