New Zealand to release 'hobbit' currency

Wednesday October 10, 2012

New Zealand is set to release The Hobbit coins worth thousands of pounds to commemorate the latest film in The Lord of The Rings franchise.

The coins, which cost up to more than 350 times their face value to make, will feature characters such as Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf.

They will be available for sale on November 1, and also can be used as legal tender.

Since the Lord of The Rings films have been filmed in New Zealand, the country has experienced an increase in tourists.

For the new release, which stars Martin FreemanCate Blanchett and Stephen Fry, a campaign has been launched to rebrand the country as "100% Middle Earth".
