Joe McElderry belts himself to victory on 'Operastar'

Monday July 11, 2011

Joe McElderry has admitted his triumph in Popstar To Operastar brought back memories of his X Factor win.

The singer, who won the final of the ITV1 show, said it was "far too close to home".

He told ITV1's Daybreak: "It was the whole same format so I was like 'Oh my god, I'm here again'."

Joe beat former Bucks Fizz singer Cheryl Baker in the final of the show, which revolves around the training of pop stars to sing opera.

He said: "Cheryl was going 'Why are you so nervous?' but it's not just about the show, it's bringing everything back about X Factor."

Joe, who won the pop singing contest in 2009, topped the charts with his debut single but subsequently lost his recording contract with Simon Cowell's company.

But he revealed he is making a new record which will reflect his new-found respect for opera.

He said: "It is exhausting. It's like doing an exercise class every day, it's not just standing up there singing, you're doing all the breathing exercises. I realised I'd thrown myself in at the deep end."
