Charles and Camilla visit Canada's famous circus

Wednesday November 11, 2009

After checking out a Canadian battleship, there was something very different in store for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall on their 11-day official visit to Canada.

The royal couple were invited to the Montreal headquarters of the Cirque du Soleil.

There they were introduced to performers, toured the various workshops that produce wigs, costumes and shoes, and were shown around the makeup room.

After talking with two aerialists who performed on suspended rings, the pair were shown an excerpt from the production company's new show, which features artists decked out in rainbow-coloured body stockings on Chinese poles.

The heir to the throne, who turns 61 on Saturday, was then serenaded with an impromptu Happy Birthday, sung by the performers.
