Queen Silvia sticks up for Princess Victoria's fiancé

Thursday November 12, 2009

Mother-in-laws often get a bad rap. But Daniel Westling, the future son-in-law of Queen Silvia of Sweden simply couldn't hope for a better one.

The elegant queen has been singing the gym owner's praises during an interview on Swedish TV, saying he will rise to the challenges of royal life once he weds Crown Princess Victoria.

"I think he's going to do well. He's going to be successful in his task of helping the princess," she said.

Since the dashing entrepreneur started dating Victoria in 2002, there have been criticisms on some sides over the fact he is not a member of the aristocracy.

But King Carl XVI Gustaf's wife, who is not of royal descent herself, dismissed such prejudices.

"Daniel has been very active in these years and has set up his own business," she said. "I hope he can share his experiences and help bring modernity to the court," she said
