Paul Gascoigne could face Christmas in jail

Friday November 12, 2010

Paul Gascoigne could face spending the festive period in prison after failing to appear in court following a drink-driving offence.

The former footballer, who was charged with being more than four times over the drink driving limit, has voluntarily checked himself into a rehabilitation clinic - thus missing the court date.

It's the second time the reunion has had to be rearranged. When he arrived last week for the meeting with the probation service he was deemed "unfit".

Giving him "one final chance" to complete the interview, the judge said: "Now let's be absolutely clear, he should be treated no differently than anybody else.

"He has voluntarily put himself into a rehabilitation clinic and has voluntarily absented himself from court and that’s the bit that causes me concern."

"What happens if I put this matter off for a given period of time and he doesn’t appear? Who’s running the show?"

The hearing has been adjourned to December 9 and the 43-year-old faces two options: "I will sentence him without a report or, secondly, I will lock him up to get the report. There will be no special treatment in any way." The judge added.

Paul's ex-wife Sheryl is set to start her stint on I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here this Sunday.
