Mourners bid farewell to author Dame Beryl Bainbridge

Tuesday July 13, 2010

Sweet William author Dame Beryl Bainbridge was laid to rest on Monday after passing away on July 2.

Hundreds came to celebrate the life of the novelist who fellow writer A.N. Wilson described as "the only writer of our day who had a truly Dickensian gift".

Among the mourners at the Kentish Town ceremony were broadcasters Sue McGregor and Melvyn Bragg.

Beryl won the Whitebread prize twice, the second time for Every Man for Himself and she was made a Dame in 2000.

Despite such acclaim, her parish priest Father Graeme Rowlands told the congregation that “none of this went to her head.”

“As a character Beryl was very easy to love. There was no pretence in her dealings with others. She was always herself,” he added.
