Neil Armstrong missing from Vuitton astronaut lineup

Thursday July 16, 2009

Astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Sally Ride and Jim Novell gaze up at the moon in Louis Vuitton's new ad campaign. But one name not in the lineup of notable space explorers was the person who first set foot on the moon, Neil Armstrong.

The man who uttered the iconic phrase: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," on July 21 1969 has chosen to skip almost all of the commemorative events of the 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing.

In the absence of Neil - who has preferred to stay out of the spotlight - his Apollo 11 crew mate Buzz – the second man to set foot on earth's satelite - is at the forefront.

Neil is said to be deeply suspicious of fans and the press, and is also reportedly wary of autograph hunters after he found out in 2005 that his Ohio barber had sold some of his hair to a collector for $3,000.

Appearing with Buzz in the Louis Vuitton ad are the first American woman on the moon and the captain of the Apollo 13 mission which suffered an explosion en route but managed to get back safely to earth.
