When a children’s charity asked celebrities including Dita Von Teese, Eva Longoria, Sir Elton John and Heidi Klum if they would transform a teddy that could be sold to help fund its pioneering work, they had bearly a moment's paws before agreeing.
With souped-up soft toys ranging from Dita's burlesque bear to Heidi's twinkling ted – complete with multicoloured gems – the project in aid of Operation Bobbi Bear captured the imaginations of all the A-listers involved.
Keen to get creative for the cause, actor and film-maker Sean Penn took his bear in a whole new direction by adding shades, tattoos and boxer shorts.
Meanwhile, teddies customised by famed designers Karl Lagerfeld, Roberto Cavalli and Jean Paul Gaultier proved a hit with fashion fans.
And although some may have found parting with their creations hard to bear, all will go under the hammer next month at Sotheby’s in New York. The money raised will benefit child victims of sexual abuse in South Africa, helping to minimise the risk of contracting HIV and bringing their abusers to justice.
