William and Kate comfort residents affected by riots

Friday August 19, 2011

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have met with local residents affected by last week's riots in Birmingham.

Prince William and his wife Kate visited the Summerfield Community Centre, which is at the heart of the Winson Green area.

The royal couple – accompanied by the lord mayor – were also due to offer their condolences to  the families of three men killed on August 10 while defending the shops and homes from looters.

Haroon Jahan, Shazad Ali and Abdul Musavir were laid to rest in a funeral service attended by 20,000 mourners.

Details of William and Kate's visit were kept secret right up until the last moment.

Like all the royals, the couple were keen to show their sympathy after seeing images of the violence on TV.

Their visit follows Prince Harry's praise for police and ambulance services in Salford, Greater Manchester.

On Wednesday, the young men's father Prince Charles was seen embracing victims in Tottenham, North London.
