Elton John hits out at ‘boring' TV talent shows

Tuesday October 19, 2010

In a Radio Times interview, 63-year-old pop legend Elton John has attacked televised talent shows, calling them "brain crippling" and "boring".

The Rocket Man singer told the publication he refused to be a judge on American Idol "because I won't slag anyone off".

Elton criticised the ability of shows like the X Factor to produce any lasting talent, suggesting that the instant-fame formula is not sustainable in the long term.

He also had a dig at modern songwriting.

“Songwriters today are pretty awful, which is why everything sounds the same. Contemporary pop isn’t very inspiring.”

It's not the first time Elton has spoken publicly about his dislike of the X Factor.

In 2006, he said the programme was only worthy for the likes of cruise ships.
