Tom Jones electrifies festival crowd with gospel tunes

Tuesday July 20, 2010

Age seems to agree with legendary singer Sir Tom Jones, who proved at the weekend that he still knows how to thrill his fans.

On Friday, the 70-year-old's midnight performance at the Latitude Festival in Suffolk pulled in so many revellers that many had to be turned away by security to avoid a crush.

But the It's Not Usual singer didn't want to disappoint.

He returned to the stage on Sunday afternoon, yet again impressing with tracks from his latest album, Praise & Blame, a collection of gospel-inspired tunes that mark a sharp departure from his pop past.

Despite the positive public reaction, earlier this month a leaked memo revealed a record company boss' disparaging remarks about the album, which he referred to as a "sick joke".

"You know, he's on the financial team there, he's not on the creative side," Tom explains. "But people who read the article, they don't know that."

Still, the negative comments don't seem to be affecting the crooner in the slightest, who says he'll continue performing as long as his voice allows him.

"I'm 70 years old now, but I don't feel it. I don't feel anywhere near it."
