David Beckham's sister in tears as lover is jailed

Friday August 20, 2010

Lynne Beckham – the older sister of football star David – was left in tears as her boyfriend was sentenced to five months in jail this week for ignoring a court ban on contacting his ex-girlfriend.

Kevin Briggs, 37, had breached a restraining order by making aggressive phone calls to charity worker Lisa Gilbey.

These calls came just four days after he left prison for a similar offence.

In the summer of 2009, he was jailed for six months for breaching a restraining order relating to Miss Gilbey, with whom he has a teenage son.

But Mr Gilbey's attorney told the court that since his latest arrest, Mr Briggs had started to turn his life around thanks, in part, to Miss Beckham, with whom he now lives.

"He has moved forward with a new relationship," Tara McCarthy said. "They want to continue forward despite this."

At sentencing, Judge Tudor Owen told Mr Briggs, an unemployed landscape gardener: "I am far from satisfied that you genuinely want to change your ways.

"You made contact with your former partner by telephone and called her vile names in an aggressive manner which not surprisingly caused her distress."

It was recently reported that Lynne, pictured with brother David at her wedding to estranged husband Colin Every in 1999, is receiving income support.
