Christmas number one for X Factor's Matt Cardle

Monday December 20, 2010

It's going to be a very merry Christmas for Matt Cardle.

Having walked away as the winner of this year's X Factor, the 27-year-old has also clinched the Christmas number one with his debut single.

When We Collide – a cover of Biffy Clyro's track – sold 439,000 copies in just six days to take the top spot.

Matt managed to beat some stiff competition, including Rihanna – his duet partner in the final – who took the second spot with What's My Name.

Upon hearing the news, the former painter and decorator was clearly taken aback.

"I can't believe it. As if winning wasn’t enough," said the incredulous star.

"I can't even begin to describe how it feels. It's nuts, crackers and crazy.

"To think that many people have supported me and bought the record is absolutely mind blowing."
