'Downton Abbey' tops US ratings

British costume drama Downton Abbey has become US network PBS' most popular show for 13 years.

Millions of stateside viewers tuned in to the channel as Downton Abbey's third series drew to a close on Sunday.

The Nielsen company recorded that 8.2 million people watched the most recent episode, which sees one of the show's key characters, Matthew Crawley, killed off.

Matthew, played by Dan Stevens, caused a stir amongst fans worldwide when he died in a car crash following the birth of his first child with Michelle Dockery's character, Lady Mary Crawley.
Downton's third season is the most-watched series on PBS since Ken Burns' epic The Civil War, which first aired in 1990.

The channel has previously shown British series such as Monty PythonAntiques Roadshow and Doc Martin.
