Hugh Bonneville joins Benedict for 'Hollow Crown'

Friday August 22, 2014

Hugh Bonneville is teaming up with Dame Judi Dench and Benedict Cumberbatch for a new BBC adaptation of Shakespeare's works.

Three plays will make up BBC2's series The Hollow Crown: The War of The Roses – Henry VI Part 1 and 2, and Richard III.

Downton Abbey actor Hugh will star as the Duke of Gloucester in Henry VI Part 1, with Oscar-nominee Sally Hawkins cast as his wife.

Benedict will be playing Richard III – and Judi signed on to play the Duchess of York after Benedict personally asked her to appear alongside him during a Q&A.

Sophie Okenodo and Keeley Hawes have also been cast, as Queen Margaret and Queen Elizabeth respectively.

"To have the chance to work with some of Britain's most talented actors is a dream come true," said executive producer Pippa Harris.

"We couldn't be more delighted to have them on board."

The first Hollow Crown series, which aired in 2012, told the stories of Richard II, Henry IV and Henry V.

The BAFTA-winning trilogy starred Ben Whishaw, Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleston.
