Former French president suggests Diana love story

Tuesday September 22, 2009

Valery Giscard d'Estaing - the former president of France - has written a novel about a passionate affair between two characters, apparently based on himself and the late Princess Diana.

Ttitled The Princess And The President  the book hints - in a fictionalsed account - that a passionate romance took place between himself and the Princess of Wales.

In the tale, the pair meet at Buckingham Palace where 'Princess Patricia of Cardiff' confesses she is devastated by her husband's adultery with another woman - believed to be a reference to Charles' long-term relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles.

The fictionalised princess then has a series of whirlwind relationships while embarking on a career campaigning for Aids and landmine victim charities.

While the book has sparked speculation that 83-year-old Mr Giscard d'Estaing - pictured with the Princess in 1994 - was one of Diana's lovers, only the author holds the key to this enigma.

Etienne de Montety, the French journalist who reviewed the novel says, "Some of the scenes are uncannily realistic. It's completely plausible the pair met at functions after he stepped down as president."

The book is due for release on October 1.
