Andy Murray's 'jinx' grandmother banned from his matches

Tuesday June 23, 2009

As Andy Murray prepares for his first Wimbledon match of the year, he seems to be taking no chances when it comes to bad luck. The 22-year-old's maternal grandmother has been banned from attending the game because she is considered something of a jinx for the tennis star.

Shirley Erskine, 73, last watched her talented grandson back in May when he played Juan Martin del Potro in the quarter finals of the Madrid Masters – a game he went on to lose.

"It was Andy's 22nd birthday and he was due to play at about 10pm, so I made a hasty booking and took Granny with me," the Glaswegian star's mum Judy explains. "This was the third successive year I've taken my mum over for Andy's birthday and he has lost each time."

"She is clearly a jinx and I'm not taking her again."

Shirley, however, has different ideas. "I fully intend to go to Wimbledon and if I could do anything to bring Andy good luck I would," said the defiant grandmother.
