Dutch Prince Johan may not recover from coma

Friday February 24, 2012

Wearing dark glasses and looking visbly shaken, Queen Beatrix and her daughter-in-law Princess Mabel visit Prince Johan Friso after the devastating news he may never regain consciousness.

Also at the hospital were the 43-year-old's brothers Willem-Alexander and Constantijn, and the queen's sister Margriet.

Friso was buried under an avalanche during an accident last Friday in the Austrian skiing resort of Lech.

He was trapped under the snow for 25 minutes and it took a further 50 minutes for him to be resuscitated.

An MRI scan was performed on Thursday, which indicated the prince suffered large amounts of brain damage due to lack of oxygen.

Doctors cannot say when the prince will come out of his coma, if at all. It may be months or even years.
