Oscar Pistorius trial to be televised

Tuesday February 25, 2014

A judge has ruled that the Oscar Pistorius trail, in which he is accused of murdering his late girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, will be broadcast live on television and radio.

Judge Dunstan Mlambo has allowed television crews "to obtain a video and audio recording" of the opening arguments, the evidence of state witnesses, closing arguments and the verdict and sentencing”.

However he has forbidden the cameras to film "Pistorius, witnesses for the defence or anyone else who objects to appearing on camera".

Many believe that by televising the trail, which is due to begin next Monday, it will dispel the perception that the rich and poor are treated differently by South Africa's justice system.

The legal ruling will be broadcast by three media outlets; eNCA, a rolling television news channel, Eyewitness News, a radio station and Multichoice, a digital channel specifically set up to broadcast the hearing.
