Monday May 25, 2009

To celebrate the first communion of two of their grandsons, Juan Valentin and Pablo Nicolas, Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia headed up a royal gathering in Barcelona at the weekend.

Dressed smartly in their Sunday best, Juan, nine, and eight-year-old Pablo (centre) - the two eldest sons of the monarch's younger daughter, Infanta Cristina, the Duchess of Palma and her husband, had plenty of supporters on their big day including siblings Miguel, seven and Irene, three.

Prince Felipe, the heir to the throne, attended with his wife Princess Letizia and their two daughters Leonor, three, and two-year-old Sofia and were joined by his elder sister Infanta Elena and her two children, Felipe, ten and eight-year-old Victoria.

Proud father Inaki Urdangarin, a former professional handball player who married the Infanta Cristina in Barcelona in October 1997, was also joined by members of his side of the family for Sunday's ceremony.
