Pope Benedict gets into Mexican spirit in sombrero

Monday March 26, 2012

The Pope has visited Mexico for the first time, and has been greeted by around 350,000 people.

Pope Benedict charmed the crowds as he got into the Mexican spirit by donning a traditional sombrero hat as he met followers.

He told cheering pilgrims in Guanajuato:"I've made a lot of trips, but I've never been welcomed with such enthusiasm.

"Now I can understand why Pope John Paul II used to say, 'I feel like I'm a Mexican pope.'"

In a prayer Pope Benedict asked Mexicans to pray to the Virgin Mary (their patron saint) for strength during the hard times.

"At this time when so many families are separated or forced to emigrate, when so many are suffering due to poverty, corruption, domestic violence, drug trafficking, the crisis of values and increased crime, we come to Mary in search of consolation, strength and hope".
