Patrick Dempsey's mother Amanda passed away on Monday following her battle with ovarian cancer.
Amanda, 79, had fought multiples occurrences of the disease since 1997.
The Grey's Anatomy actor and his family were inspired to partner with Central Maine Medical Center — where Amanda had been treated — to found The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in their native Lewiston, Maine back in 2008.
Peter Chalke, president and CEO of Central Maine Healthcare, released a statement in which he described Amanda as "both a great lady and a determined fighter who displayed tremendous courage, class and grace during her long battle with cancer."
The message went on to explain how Amanda was a "private and humble person" who was always keen to give a helping hand during fundraising events for the centre.
Amanda would sew handmade comfort items to give to cancer patients, bring in homemade jam or apples she'd picked from her garden and help tidy up the storage cupboard.
According to its official website, the Dempsey Center "provides free cancer support, education and integrative medicine services to anyone impacted by cancer, regardless of where treatment is received."
