William and Kate to meet South Pole heroes

Thursday April 26, 2012

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are to meet a group of servicemen on Thursday who trekked, unaided, to the South Pole.

The intrepid explorers – made up of two groups of soldiers – marched their way through sub-zero temperatures in aid of the Royal British Legion.

They recreated the race between Captain Robert Scott and Ronald Amundsen to reach the Pole, which took place a century ago.

In the original expedition, Devon born serviceman Captain Scott arrived only to find his rival had beaten him to it. He and his comrades perished on the way home.

Prince William was patron of the modern day expedition and will give a speech before he and Kate meet guests at a reception being held at Goldsmiths' Hall in London.
