Ben Forster, 31, will play Jesus Christ in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical after winning ITV's Superstar reality show.
Ben, from Sunderland, won the most public votes in the live final and will play the son of God in an arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar.
The stage-school graduate was joined by Rory Taylor, 24, and former male model Roger Wright, 41, in the final of the competition.
The tearful winner, who has already appeared in the West End, sang a passionate rendition of Queen's Who Wants To Live Forever.
Mel C, who had previously said that Ben was her favourite, described his performance as "utterly astounding".
The winner sung his heart out despite missing his cue at the start of the song.
Lord Lloyd-Webber said his performance was "mesmeric", while judge Jason Donovan described him as a "superstar".
Ben said he was looking forward to starting work next week. "I can't believe it, I wasn't expecting this to happen in my lifetime," he said.
"So thank you so much to everyone who voted, I will absolutely do you proud."
Lord Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice's featuring Australian comic Tim Minchin as Judas Iscariot, DJ Chris Moyles as King Herod and judge Mel C as Mary Magdalene.
Jesus Christ Superstar goes on tour in September.
