Australia's model muddle: show crowns wrong winner

Wednesday September 29, 2010

The live final of Australia's Next Top Model ended in chaos this week as the wrong contestant was named winner of the show.

Kelsey Martinovich (centre) was crowned champion but while in the middle of her acceptance speech she was interrupted by host Sarah Murdoch (right).

Listening to her earpiece as she shook her head, Sarah had to make an awkward apology before revealing that Amanda Ware (left) was in fact the winner.

"Oh my god. I don’t know what to say right now," she told the two hopefuls, and a crowd of 2,000 people.

"I'm feeling a bit sick about this. I'm so sorry about this, oh my god. I don’t know what to say. This is a complete accident. I'm so sorry. It's Amanda…it was read to me wrong.

"This is what happens when you have live TV folks, I'm so sorry, this is insane."

Despite having victory snatched from her hands – Sarah said the mistake occurred after the wrong name was fed into her earpiece – 19-year-old Kelsey remained incredibly gracious.

"You won, its fine, its ok, its ok, it’s an honest mistake," she told her rival Amanda, before giving her a hug.

To compensate for the error, producer Fox has decided to give the runner-up $20,000 (£15,000) and a trip to New York.

As the eventual winner, Amanda received a magazine shoot and cover, a modelling contract, a $25,000 (£15,000) campaign with Levi, a car, $20,000 cash and a trip to the Big Apple.
