Andy Murray serves up nail-biting victory as roof debuts

Tuesday June 30, 2009

Scottish tennis ace Andy Murray made history on Monday night with the latest finishing Wimbledon match ever.

The 22-year-old sports star fought out a nail biting five-set match against his Swiss practice partner and pal Stanislas Wawrinka, scoring the final point to take him through to the quarter-finals at 10.39pm.

The victory was claimed during the first full game to take place under the cover of the new Centre Court roof, which had been closed earlier in the day after rain.

Many of the fans were forced to leave before the final result so not to miss their last trains. The remaining crowd made up for their absence, though, giving Andy a standing ovation as he won.

"It was tough. But the atmosphere when you have 15,000 people supporting you makes it extra special so thanks a lot, it's a great day," said Andy, who will take on Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero on Wednesday for a place in the semi-finals.
