Thursday September 30, 2010

Silver screen star Tony Curtis has died at the age of 85. He passed away peacefully in bed after suffering a cardiac arrest, a family spokesman said.

The Hollywood legend was probably best known for his comedic turn in Some Like It Hot opposite Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon.

He won an Academy Award nomination for The Defiant Ones, in which he played a racist prisoner who escapes with African-American actor Sydney Poitier.

Born Bernard Schwartz in New York City, Tony appeared in 140 movies.

Another career highlight was appearing on the cover of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club album.

A younger generation also knew him for voicing the character Stony Curtis on The Flintstones cartoon.

The star is survived by his sixth wife Jill Vandenberg Curtis, who was 42-years his junior.

He also leaves behind five children including actress daughter Jamie Lee Curtis.
