Former aide: 'Queen thought Charles wouldn't re-marry'

Monday November 30, 2009

The Queen's former deputy private secretary has become the most senior royal aide to go on record about the British monarch's feelings towards her elder son's second marriage.

In a Channel four documentary to be broadcast on Monday evening, Mary Francis says: "The Queen didn't talk about it much, but the impression I got was that she really didn't expect there would be a wedding within her own lifetime."

The Queen looks at how Prince Charles sought to win public acceptance before making divorcee Camilla his wife.

It also discloses how, before their marriage, Camilla was invited to the Queen Mother's funeral not as Charles' partner, but as a "friend of the Queen Mother".
