More pictures of the royals at Christmas

As Prince William spent the Christmas break on duty as a rescue pilot, it emerged that he'd played a key role in an attempt to save the life of a young mum.

Earlier this month, the royal - pictured at his base in Anglesey on Christmas Day - was called in to help 20-year-old Sarah Bowden.

She was suffering from swine flu.

He helicoptered life support equipment and expert staff from Leicester to a Manchester clinic, where she was being treated.

Doctors at North Manchester General hospital had sought assistance from Leicester's Glenfield Hospital because it specialises in swine flu care.

Unfortunately Sarah died nine days later – leaving behind her 11-day-old son Harry.

Her stepmother Kelly Sarginson, 38, told The Sun: "Prince William gave her a chance of survival. We will always be grateful".
