Michael Bublé ’s family hasn’t had it easy over the last few years. After he and Luisiana Lopilato ’s son, Noah, was diagnosed with cancer, the powerhouse couple took a step back from their respective careers to focus on his recovery. But the Canadian crooner is back with some new music – and a new album! – and while on a promotional tour stop in Sydney, Michael shared some words (and a few tears) about his firstborn.

Speaking with Australia’s TODAY Show, the 43-year-old said: “It sucked and it still sucks because what we went through was the worst possible thing that you could hear as a parent and maybe as a human being. I much rather it would have been me. I wished, many times I wished it had been.” It’s been two years since Noah was diagnosed with cancer, and the youngster has since gone into remission.

Michael and Luisana welcomed their third child, Vida, two months ago – a very exciting addition to their loving family, who have gone through so much and still remained strong. “There were a million times that my wife and I were just surviving, struggling to survive and to breath and … more times than people could understand, some days when we wished we didn’t wake up,” he explained, fighting back tears. “When we did, we felt the love of those people, we knew they were praying for us, we knew there was goodness out there.”

It got to the point where the GRAMMY winner had to re-evaluate his priorities in life, and decided to focus fully on his family, taking a hiatus from his music career. He wasn’t even sure he’d return to music at all. “I didn’t anticipate returning to recording or performing and I was fine with that. My entire worldview has changed completely these last few years. I wanted to spend all my time with my wife and kids. That was my focus,” he said in a statement when announcing his new album, love, which comes out Nov. 16 “During that time, I also learned how much love and humanity is out in the world from the prayers and good wishes we received. But slowly, along with understanding what my priorities in life are, I began to feel a new commitment to express the emotions and lessons I’ve embraced.”
